In order to help me find out what to include in a paranormal horror film narrative, I have made brief bullet points about three paranormal horror films.
Insidious (2010)
¨ Happy family moved into a new house
¨ Child becomes comatose
¨ Mother finds clues which suggest paranormal activity
¨ Call in the experts who give an explanation
¨ Dad must delve into his secret past and play the part of the hero to save his son
¨ Son is saved but Dad’s soul is compromised
¨ Ends with a twist – final scare
Paranormal Activity (2007)
¨ Happy couple
¨ Start experiencing strange things
¨ Set a camera to capture footage
¨ Strange things become more frequent
¨ Woman becomes possessed
¨ Man becomes suspicious that something is wrong
¨ Woman kills him
The Sixth Sense (1999)
¨ Happy family
¨ Strange incident occurs where Protagonist is shot
¨ Protagonist helps child with supernatural ability
¨ Child discloses the truth to his mother
¨ Twist as protagonist discovers he is actually dead
Through doing this exercise I have concluded that a paranormal horror films needs five main points - establishing the setting / location and set up characterisation; a supernatural related problem occurs which other characters are unaware of; other characters begin to realise that there is a problem; finally actions are taken to fix the problem, sometimes ending with a twist.
